Major Broadmead Road works to create new access for Universal site in Bedford

Enabling works on Broadmead Road near the Universal site, with signage and temporary traffic control in place

Early enabling works will close sections of Broadmead Road, realign carriageway and add two site access points as highways work begins for the Universal Destinations & Experiences UK project.

Broadmead Road in Bedford is set to undergo a programme of major changes as early enabling works begin for the Universal Destinations & Experiences UK project. The scheme focuses on highway improvements around the railway level crossing, the creation of two new access points serving the West Gateway and Core Zone, and a realignment of the road between Woburn Road and the Core Zone access to establish how traffic will flow in and out of the resort.

Practical impacts are scheduled as follows: Broadmead Road will be closed between the Woburn Road junction and Hansons Reach roundabout from April 20 to May 22; temporary traffic lights will operate at the Woburn Road junction; diversions will run via Green Lane (including the 68 bus); and Woburn Road will see a full closure from May 15 at 8pm until May 18 at 5am. A reduced speed limit of 30mph will apply along Broadmead Road for the duration of the works.

The works cover the full length of Broadmead Road and are being carried out under a permit issued by Bedford Borough Council, confirming they form part of the planned development process. It may cause some short-term disruption, but these changes mark a tangible step in putting the infrastructure in place for the future resort.
