New concept art has appeared showing what the future Universal Studios UK station on the East–West Rail Marston Vale line may look like, and accompanying transport plans now include significant local road changes.
What is confirmed
The Broadmead Road crossing is set to close and be replaced with a bridge. Manor Road (the Kempston Hardwick route that links the Core Zone and Lake Zone) will be closed permanently at the crossing; only a pedestrian footbridge is planned to remain. Vehicular access that previously used those crossings would be diverted via a new road through the proposed transport hub on Universal land.
Why it matters
Detailed transport plans make the station feel closer to reality, but the road changes could have local consequences. Manor Road is a heavily used route, and losing the direct vehicle link may create knock-on effects for nearby businesses, with Interchange Park mentioned as particularly vulnerable. There is also a wider concern that increased disruption around Bedford could encourage some people to choose alternatives such as Milton Keynes.
What to watch
During the SDO process there was considerable emphasis on keeping disruption to a minimum, so these adjustments raise questions about how that commitment will be delivered on the ground. We’ll be watching for formal confirmations of the transport layout, any mitigation proposals for local traffic, and further detail on the new transport-hub road.
