I completely missed this while filming and taking photos, but fair play to the eagle-eyed subscribers over on YouTube who spotted it!
There are TWO wells on the site… which completely blows my 1874 date theory wide open!
And now, rather than having answers, we’ve probably created even more questions.
If one well was recorded in 1874 but the other wasn’t, could it be that they were actually both much older and only one was discovered and documented at the time?
What makes this even more interesting is that they both appear to have a very similar stone construction style. Could we be looking at something dating back much further than the 1870s? Could these potentially have Roman, Saxon, medieval, or even older origins?
At this stage, we simply don’t know — but that’s what makes archaeology so fascinating. Every discovery seems to open another mystery.
