More signs of progress around the future Wixams railway station have been spotted. New temporary traffic lights are due to be installed on Ampthill Road from 6th July through to 24th August, around 290 metres north of the Manor Road (Chimney Corner) junction.
The official notice simply states that the lights are to facilitate work vehicles accessing the site, but given the location this appears to be the first enabling works associated with the future Wixams railway station.
We’re still a long way from seeing trains pulling into the new station, and at this stage it’s likely to be early access, surveys and ground investigations rather than major construction. That said, it’s another small but important step forward, and it’s encouraging to see activity now starting on the ground.
One thing to be aware of: these works are unfortunately going to overlap with the Manor Road closure, so traffic around the area could become particularly busy, especially during the morning and evening rush hours.
If you’re travelling through the area: coming from Wixams? You’ll probably be better off heading out via the A6. Coming from Stewartby? Consider using Woburn Road instead to avoid getting stuck in congestion on Ampthill Road altogether.
