• Broadmead Road/Woburn Road: three-way traffic lights were switched on from 17 July when Broadmead Road reopened.
• Stewartby Footpaths 1 and 2: closed from 29 January 2026.

These dates come from Universal’s community-update page and relate to its project. Travellers should check the latest notice before setting out, because emergency works and unrelated council, utility or Network Rail activity may not appear there.

Road access: what the approved concept does

The Environmental Statement describes a new A421 junction and dual-carriageway access through the West Gateway, crossing the Marston Vale railway by bridge into the Core Zone. Departing traffic heading west or south would use a new southbound slip road; traffic heading north or east would use the existing Woburn Road and Marsh Leys interchange. The option was selected after alternatives were assessed for congestion, land take, woodland and environmental effects. Detailed highway design can still evolve, subject to testing and approval.

The A421 is strategically useful because it links the site towards M1 Junction 13 to the west and Bedford/A1 connections to the east. It is also a corridor with existing congestion and flood resilience concerns. The Secretary of State concluded that operational effects, including at M1 Junction 13, were material but not severe when mitigation and controls were considered.

Wixams and Stewartby are different rail proposals

Wixams is on the Midland Main Line east of the site. The original two-platform local-station project was stopped so a larger four-platform design could be developed. Universal’s transport framework expects an expanded station and a shuttle to the resort.

The legal position contains a contingency: Grand Opening normally requires Wixams to be open with scheduled services, but the Secretary of State may endorse a temporary bus scheme from another Midland Main Line station. If used, that scheme must continue until Wixams opens and is subject to a deadline beyond which resort operations must cease unless Wixams is available. Once Wixams is operating, the Order requires the dedicated resort shuttle.

Stewartby is part of East West Rail’s Marston Vale proposals west/southwest of the main resort area. EWR’s latest consultation proposes replacing existing smaller stations with fewer modern stations, including a resort-serving Stewartby station, and delivering the relevant section earlier than previously envisaged.

The resort’s planning permission does not depend on the East West Rail station. The Secretary of State called it beneficial but a bonus. That distinction matters when assessing claims that EWR delay would automatically postpone Universal’s opening.
