Wixams station to be four-platform, council told

Network Rail is developing a larger station with a central bridge; Bedford Borough Council has been told it will face no further costs and its final account is nearing agreement.

A useful update on Wixams station came out of last night’s council meeting (5 October 2026), covering the four‑platform design, council costs and calls for clearer information.

Network Rail is developing the plans for the larger station, with a central bridge providing access across all four tracks. The design is still being worked through, so we’re waiting for the final layout and a confirmed opening timetable.

There was also reassurance on costs. Asked whether Bedford Borough Council would face any further station development costs, an officer said there would be no more costs falling on the council.

Agreement on the council’s final account is also approaching. The previously reported figure of around £32 million could come down slightly once that is settled. That isn’t the total cost of the expanded station — it relates to the council’s existing financial position.

Councillors also wanted clearer updates. One raised concerns that they had heard less about Wixams station since responsibility moved to the Department for Transport, and wanted more detail on what happens next.

It was suggested that a Department for Transport representative could attend a future scrutiny meeting to give a fuller picture.

There’s progress behind the scenes, then, but plenty of people will be keen to see the finished plans and find out when they’ll finally be able to catch a train from Wixams.

Would the new station make a difference to your regular journeys?
